Oliver’s High Price for Safety

With a last heave of effort on the ropes, Oliver Tooney felt the wall give and begin to topple down.

“Watch yourselves, lads!” called the slender Tooney as he and the other workmen danced out of the way of the tumbling bricks. Oliver turned to survey the opened tenement and saw rooms revealed like a view into some dilapidated beehive. The workmen rushed in through the dust of the fallen wall with wheelbarrows to begin clearing the debris.

Oliver doffed his cap and mopped a kerchief at the sweat gathering in his short red hair and beginning to trickle down his forehead. It was a hot day in London and while the city twitched in its death throes, life continued in Rottenham.

She had plans for their community and it was Oliver’s devotion to the beautiful leader of Rottenham that had him supervising the razing of the tenement. Once it was cleared they would pour in good soil and start raising crops to feed the burgeoning community. If they couldn’t get good enough soil for crops, they could at least grow grass for livestock. Goats and chickens could still be had if you knew where to look, even since the Deadening.

Rottenham wasn’t a paradise by any stretch. The people within its walled borders still struggled every day. But things were surely improving while the rest of London decayed and festered like the rotting corpse of a fallen giant.

Oh, yes, Sabrina had many plans for Rottenham. Oliver had known her since they were children growing up just a few doors apart. She had been a skinny little brown-haired girl with pigtails and he had been a lanky, freckle-faced boy with perpetually skinned knees. They’d hated each other for exactly one day and then an older boy had tried to pick on Sabrina. Oliver had given him a proper drubbing and her and Sabrina had been inseparable friends ever since.

They had known each other through the best and brightest days of their youth and they had known each other through the darkest days of what had befallen London. Thanks to Sabrina, it seemed though those darkest days were behind them. Though the darkness lingered in Oliver’s heart.

He looked across the commons at where Sabrina was assisting in clearing the rubble from another tenement. Even in work gloves and a dusty smock, her long, dark brown hair braided down her back, she was beautiful. She had grown from a scrawny girl often mistaken for a boy into a well-developed woman. He marveled at her firm, long legs, her slender neck, and how her body had filled out. Particularly her bust, which strained at her corseted bodice and threatened the straps of her work smock. Crouched over, using a hand spade to scoop up rocks, her bum looked rather lovely as well.

Oliver realized Sabrina was looking back at him and he waved sheepishly. She smiled and walked across the common towards him. His heart beat a little faster as she approached.
